Hello, I’m Susannah!

Thank you for taking the time to browse through my web pages. All the silver jewellery you see is designed and handmade by me in my little Nottingham ‘eco’ studio. What started as a hobby has since turned into a little business that allows me to spend time doing what I have completely fallen in love with - creating unique contemporary jewellery which is made for giving, without excessive cost to the earth.

People often ask where my inspiration comes from and I find that such a hard question to answer! In part it comes from the metal itself – I am endlessly fascinated with the shapes and textures that can be achieved when the silver is coaxed into becoming something more than it started. Increasingly, my designs are organic in nature – I have a sense of where I want to go, but I’m often not quite sure where the journey will end! This means that many of my pieces are absolutely one-of-a-kind. Perhaps this adds some extra magic to the jewellery?

My business values are founded on kindness, on friendship, on communities supporting each other.  It takes time to kindle a friendship just as it takes time to create a piece of handmade jewellery. And all these things must take place on a planet that is similarly nurtured. Wherever possible I use sustainable materials.  The silver I work with is 100% recycled, rather than being freshly mined; my workshop is free from single-use plastic, and rather than gift-wrapping in beautiful velvet-lined boxes, I've chosen to swaddle my pieces in soft bamboo wadding, silks and hemp. I am always interested in exploring other ways of promoting these values. For example, all the pieces in the Solitude Collection will arrive gift-wrapped in beautiful sari silk ribbon which has been produced using waste fabric left over from sari manufacturing, and supplied by Yarn Yarn, a small company which works to support women in isolated communities of northern India.

The majority of my jewellery is handmade to order. And many of these are bespoke commissions based on a customer’s idea. So, if you’ve seen something you love, or have had an idea about a design that you’d like to see made real, then do get in touch: susannahjbrookes@gmail.com. You can also find out more about commissioning a piece here.

Buying recycled silver jewellery in this way is an environmentally and ethically good choice to make.
